New Delhi, Dec. 13 — The social media is the most preferred platform for people to express their thoughts on social issues, but Bollywood stars prefer to steer clear of any social commentary on the Internet.
A new study by digital research agency Thought Buzz, based on the last 100 tweets of 10 popular Bollywood celebrities on micro-blogging site Twitter, shows that stars use the site to promote their work, interact with fans and share personal moments, but almost never talk about social issues.
The research reveals that Amitabh Bachchan, who tweets 27 times a day on an average, (the highest among A-listers) has only dedicated 5% of his tweets to social causes. While Salman, Akshay and Shahid have only tweeted only 1 per cent about social causes, celebrities such as Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone have tweeted about none. Interestingly, 10 percent of Sonam Kapoor’s tweets are on social causes.
Talking about the trend, industry expert Atul Mohan, says, “These celebrities should tweet more about social causes because when they say something, they impact a large number of people.”
Ad guru Prahlad Kakkar explains why celebs tweet about personal things, saying, “It will be great if our celebs write more about social causes, since it will help in bringing about a change. But I guess they write about their personal moments, and interact with fans so that they are not misquoted in the media.”
