Albanese Government Pledges $8.5 Million for Australia’s First Hindu School

In a landmark move for Australia’s Hindu community, a re-elected Albanese Labor Government has pledged $8.5 million to support the construction of the country’s first-ever Hindu school. The new primary school will be located in Oakville, North-West Sydney, catering to the educational and cultural needs of the growing Hindu population.

With over 680,000 Hindus in Australia, Hinduism is the nation’s third-largest religion and its fastest-growing major faith. However, despite its rapid expansion, Hindu representation in the schooling sector remains limited. This commitment by the Albanese Government aims to bridge that gap, providing families in West and North-West Sydney with a school that aligns with their faith and values.

The school will be operated by the Hindu Education and Cultural Centre, delivering the New South Wales curriculum while incorporating Hindu teachings, culture, traditions, and philosophy. Strongly backed by the Hindu Council of Australia, which represents over a hundred Hindu organisations, the initiative has garnered widespread community support.

This federal investment builds upon the contributions already made by the Hindu community and other stakeholders for the school’s establishment, including land acquisition and initial development costs. As with all government election commitments, the funding will be allocated in accordance with the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

Government and Community Support

Minister for Education Jason Clare highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating:

“The Albanese Labor Government is building Australia’s future and investing in the first-ever Hindu school in Australia. Hinduism is Australia’s fastest-growing major religion, and the Hindu community plays an important role in our multicultural society. This new school will provide parents in West and North-West Sydney with the option to send their children to a school that embraces their faith and cultural identity.”

Andrew Charlton MP also emphasized the value of the project, adding:

“Australian Hindus are smart, hardworking, and community-minded. It’s about time their kids had a school of their own. In Western Sydney, we take pride in raising intelligent children in a vibrant cultural environment—this new Hindu school will contribute to that legacy, strengthening modern Australia and shaping a brighter future for all.”

The establishment of Australia’s first Hindu school marks a significant milestone in the recognition and integration of Hinduism within the country’s education sector. As Australia continues to embrace its multicultural fabric, such initiatives will further enrich its diverse and inclusive society.
