It’s not just cricket: sport, social cohesion and belonging

A new report by the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute reveals how members of Australia’s increasingly diverse communities – particularly those from South Asian backgrounds – are reshaping Australian cricket from the grassroots up.

Titled It’s not just cricket: sport, social cohesion and belonging, the narrative, authored by Vanessa Murray, explores the powerful role of cricket in creating culturally safe spaces and fostering a sense of belonging for diaspora communities across the country.

Through personal reflections and interviews with changemakers within the South Asian community across Australia, It’s not just cricket: sport, social cohesion and belonging sheds light on the challenges faced in mainstream sporting spaces and the grassroots initiatives that have emerged in response to address these challenges.

The narrative highlights how cricket has become a vital tool for social cohesion and calls for greater recognition and inclusion within Australian sport.
