March 17, 2025 – After spending nearly nine months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is scheduled to return to Earth on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. Williams, along with fellow astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore, will be making their long-awaited journey back home after an unexpectedly prolonged mission.
The duo is set to depart the ISS aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. The undocking is planned for 1:05 a.m. ET (11:35 a.m. IST), with a splashdown expected in the Gulf of Mexico at 5:57 p.m. ET (4:27 a.m. IST on March 19, 2025).
Extended Stay Due to Technical Issues
Williams and Wilmore originally launched on what was meant to be a short-duration test flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. However, due to technical issues with the vehicle, NASA made the decision to extend their mission. As a result, both astronauts became an integral part of the ongoing Crew-9 mission aboard the ISS.
During their extended stay, Williams and Wilmore participated in a variety of scientific experiments, maintenance tasks, and spacewalks, further contributing to NASA’s long-term space exploration goals.
NASA to Provide Live Coverage
NASA has confirmed that the return journey will be broadcast live across its official channels. Space enthusiasts and well-wishers can tune in to witness the final moments of Williams and Wilmore’s record-breaking mission.
This return marks a significant milestone in Williams’ space career, as she continues to be one of the most experienced female astronauts in NASA’s history.
Stay tuned for updates on the safe return of Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore!
