Why some people feel divine energy more than others

Many old places of worship are believed to have powerful spiritual connections due to a combination of historical, cultural, architectural, and personal factors that resonate deeply with individuals.

Feeling a profound spiritual link or experiencing a transformation at a church or temple is normal.

Spirituality is a deeply personal experience, and different places and practices resonate with people uniquely.

For many, these experiences are a testament to the power of faith and tradition and their capacity for unfathomable emotional and spiritual connection.

Others may not feel the same way, and that’s okay, too. This is because spiritual experiences are subjective and can vary widely from person to person.

What might feel transformative to one person may feel ordinary to another.

Such happenings are a natural part of exploring one’s devoutness and seeking meaning in life.

I write this column after spending time at the unique Shrine of St. Mary MacKillop at St. Stephen’s Chapel in Brisbane, Queensland’s oldest surviving church building.

The shrine dedicated to the 150-year-old St Stephen Cathedral is a pilgrimage site for many Catholics and others who feel a spiritual bond to St. Mary MacKillop, also known as Saint Mary of the Cross, Australia’s first canonised saint.

Pilgrims visit the shrine because it is said that her spirit is present. The monument is made from scented camphor wood to honour her legacy, pray for her intercession, and find inspiration.

During my prayers, I noticed several people crying and spending a long time at her shrine, seeking solace and comfort.

I was asked why some people easily connect to divine energies while others do not, despite regular prayers and visits to spiritual sites.

Here are ten reasons why some people might feel disconnected from the divine despite regularly attending places of worship and praying daily.

  1. Sincere connection:A lack of genuine spiritual engagement occurs when individuals go through religious practices without connecting spiritually. Their rituals may become routine or habitual, lacking the personal connection and reflection needed to feel a deeper relationship with the divine.
  2. Outlook:They come with expectations and preconceived notions about connecting with the divine. When experiences don’t match expectations, they feel disconnected.
  3. Distractions:Disturbances, stress, and noise can cloud one’s mind and make it difficult to focus on spiritual practices. A cluttered mind can hinder the ability to connect deeply with the divine.
  4. Emotional barriers: Past traumas, guilt, unresolved personal issues, or feelings of unworthiness can hinder one’s spiritual connection. These emotional and psychological barriers can impede fully embracing spiritual experiences.
  5. Absence of knowledge: Some people lack a deeper understanding of the teachings, rituals, and practices, and the spiritual significance of these acts. Engaging with religious practices without comprehension can lead to a lack of connection.
  6. Poor reflection: Performing rituals mechanically, without introspection or personal reflection, can lead to a lack of spiritual fulfillment. Spiritual practices are most effective when accompanied by deep personal reflection and intention.
  7. Belief issues:Doubts about faith, beliefs, or the existence of a higher power can hinder the feeling of connection. Misalignment between belief systems and practices may cause a disconnect.
  8. Inadequate guidance:A lack of spiritual guidance or mentorship can also contribute to feelings of disconnection. A spiritual teacher that provides support, wisdom, and encouragement can help foster a deeper connection to the divine.
  9. Misalignment of intentions:If one’s prayers and religious practices are motivated by desires not aligned with spiritual growth, such as seeking material gains or favour, it may lead to a sense of detachment.
  10. Cultural pressure:Some people may engage in religious practices due to cultural or family expectations rather than personal conviction, resulting in a lack of sincere bond.

Spirituality is a highly personal experience that varies significantly from person to person.

Feeling disconnected despite regular worship can stem from internal and external factors.

I believe addressing these factors, seeking deeper understanding, and cultivating a personal and reflective spiritual practice can help foster a stronger connection with the divine.

All sacred sites offer a unique blend of historical significance, spiritual energy, architectural beauty, and community.

I spent five days contemplating at St. Stephen’s Chapel because it resonated with me profoundly and provided spiritual solace, healing, and realisation.

I know I will keep returning to this sacred place over and over because the transcendent experience can only be felt and not described.
