In a historic moment for the Indian film industry, actress Rani Mukerji launched a commemorative stamp honoring the legendary filmmaker, the late Yash Chopra. This significant event marked the first-ever celebration of Indian cinema at the Australian Parliament and coincided with the 15th anniversary of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM).
The event, held at the Parliament in Canberra, featured keynote speeches from both Rani Mukerji and filmmaker Karan Johar. A highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the special stamp, paying tribute to Yash Chopra’s iconic cinematic legacy, his monumental contributions to Indian cinema, and his role in making Hindi cinema a global cultural phenomenon.
Yash Chopra, often revered as the god of romance in cinema, was the first Patron of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, a connection that has always been deeply cherished by the festival. The stamp unveiling ceremony, which took place on August 13th, 2024, ahead of the IFFM’s official start on August 15th, was attended by distinguished dignitaries, Members of Parliament, and various ministers. Their presence underscored the global impact and cultural significance of Indian cinema, with special recognition of Yash Chopra’s enduring influence.
Expressing her joy, Rani Mukerji said, “I am truly honored and humbled to be part of this momentous occasion, launching the commemorative stamp of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra at the Australian Parliament House! This celebration not only honors Yash Chopra and YRF’s rich, 50-year legacy in shaping global pop culture but also the Indian film industry, which has entertained countless people through the power of cinema. The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne has been pivotal in strengthening cultural and creative ties between India and Australia for the past 15 years. I am proud to see the festival grow year after year, acting as a bridge connecting the best creative minds of both nations.”
Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange shared her thoughts, saying, “This is a landmark year for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne as we celebrate our 15th anniversary. It is a blessing to share this special evening with Rani Mukerji, unveiling the commemorative stamp in honor of the late Yash ji. His contributions to Indian cinema have influenced generations and will continue to do so for years to come. Having Rani here on this special day to honor his legacy is an iconic moment for us. Yash Ji was our first festival patron and a tremendous support system. Dedicating our 15th year to him with this commemorative stamp is a fitting tribute.”
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne remains a beacon of cultural exchange, showcasing the rich diversity and creativity of Indian cinema. This year’s festival, the largest celebration of Indian films outside of India, promises to be a grand affair, taking place across Melbourne from August 15th to 25th, 2024.
