‘Indian Doctors in Australia (IDIA)’ is arranging the first  ‘Indian Parallel Cinema Festival of Australia (IPCFA)’

The ‘Indian Doctors in Australia (IDIA)’, a pan-Australia not-for-profit organisation of doctors of Indian origin is arranging the first  ‘Indian Parallel Cinema Festival of Australia (IPCFA)’ in Sydney from the 9th to 11th of Aug 2024.

While the usual Indian movie screened in Australian theatres is the typical big-budget Bollywood movies which certainly have a market of their own, we in  IDIA feel that there is an unmet need to create exposure to the vibrant heritage of the parallel cinema of India, something which can satisfy the intellectual satiety of many film lovers in Australia.

To fulfill that gap, we are organizing the annual ‘Indian Parallel Cinema Festival of Australia (IPCFA)’, to be held from the 9th to 11th Aug 2024. The venue is Palace Cinema, 99 Norton Street, Leichhardt, Sydney, NSW, 2040.

Details about our group IDIA are available at: Idia.com.au.

We plan to feature a selection of films by different Indian arthouse filmmakers each year, including the likes of  Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, Aparna Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and Govind Nihalani along with the more contemporary directors such as Nandita Das, Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, and Konkana Sen Sharma, among others.

The first IPCFA will focus on the works of the legendary Satyajit Ray. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded Ray an Honorary Award in 1992 for Lifetime Achievement.

We have reached out to another icon of Indian cinema and someone with an intimate perspective on the films of Satyajit Ray – his son the filmmaker Sandip Ray. While Sandip is an established filmmaker in his own right, he has been involved with Satyajit Ray’s films in various roles including assistant director and still photographer. Sandip will be attending this event in person.

The renowned Indian actor Victor Banerjee, who has appeared in the works of filmmakers such as David Lean and Roman Polanski and has worked multiple times with Satyajit Ray has shown a keen interest in this venture.

Victor (virtually)  and Sandip shall contribute with post-screening interactive discussions with the audience and a ‘movie-making masterclass’ will be conducted by Sandip.

On behalf of IDIA, we cordially invite you to this event. Could we please request you to help us by spreading the word as much as you can through your wonderful network?

Details about the event are available at: https://www.ipcfa.com.au/
