SYDNEY, 12 July 2024:
As part of its commitment to NAIDOC Week, Young Academics Early Learning Centre (YA) this week hosted a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at its Westmead centre.
The occasion, which was held in conjunction with YA partner the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, was conducted by Uncle John, a respected local Elder, as well as Aunty Liz.
YA’s Group Operations Manager Jakki Graham said the ceremony was a meaningful way to honour the traditional custodians of the land and embrace the rich cultural heritage of the Darug Nation.
“At Young Academics, inclusivity is a core value embedded in our services. NAIDOC Week serves as a reminder of the importance of this value and our commitment to creating an environment where every child feels valued and respected, regardless of their cultural background,” she said.
“Connecting young children with Indigenous culture offers numerous benefits that contribute to their overall development. Exposure to Indigenous traditions and stories helps children appreciate diversity and fosters a sense of respect. Understanding and participating in cultural practices can enhance children’s empathy and social skills, which builds their social and emotional development.”
