What is The Salvation Army, why is it important, what are its services and more … in an Indus Age special interview

Commissioner Miriam Gluyas, Territorial Commander for The Salvation Army Australia and Chair of its Board of Governance joins the Indus Age team to answer pertinent questions. Read on.

What is The Salvation Army?

“Namaste” to the vibrant Indian community in Australia! The Salvation Army, with its
roots tracing back to 1865 in London, England, is a global movement dedicated to
serving humanity with compassion and integrity. From its inception, its mission has
been clear: to meet human needs without discrimination. Today, it operates in over
130 countries, including India and Australia, where its presence is deeply felt.
In India, The Salvation Army offers a wide array of services tailored to local needs.
From providing shelter and food for the homeless to running schools and vocational
training centres, The Salvation Army is committed to uplifting communities and
transforming lives.

In Australia, The Salvation Army plays a multifaceted role, offering a wide range of
services to individuals and families in need. From providing emergency shelter and
meals to supporting individuals struggling with addiction and homelessness, The
Salvation Army is a pillar of support for many Australians, including members of our
Indian community.

One of the most remarkable aspects of The Salvation Army is its inclusive nature.
Regardless of one’s background, ethnicity, or religion, everyone is welcome with
open arms. This ethos aligns perfectly with the values of the Indian community,
where diversity is celebrated as a strength just like the Hindi expression “Ekta mein
bahut shakti hai”.

What is the Red Shield Appeal?

The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s key fundraising activity. Donations
made to the appeal provide vitally needed financial support for services and
programs, enabling The Salvation Army to deliver on its mission across local
communities, cities, suburbs, and rural towns throughout Australia. Salvos frontline
staff provide support to someone every 17 seconds, and last year, we answered
more than 1.67 million calls from those seeking support.

What are the goals in 2024?

The Salvation Army is aiming to raise $38 million for the Red Shield Appeal by EOFY
to fund over 2000 services across Australia.

What services do The Salvation Army offer?

The Red Shield Appeal helps to fund the following social services:

o Family welfare assistance
o Refuge for women and children in crisis
o Homeless shelters
o Youth drop-in centres and support programs
o Emergency and disaster relief
o Drug and alcohol rehabilitation
o Employment training programs
o Chaplains, including rural, outback and emergency services

What are the key areas people are needing help in 2024?
Surging prices are driving Australians towards greater hardship and making
everyday life impossible for thousands of already vulnerable Aussies. With the prices
of grocery staples, utilities and transport rising indiscriminately, many households
have gone without essentials like food and heating due to a lack of income or money,
and many more are currently unable to afford meals, necessities, and medical bills.
Additionally, Australia is facing a housing crisis like never before. Relentless rent
increases and record low vacancy rates are driving more Australians to the brink of
homelessness. Unable to afford record-high prices and with limited stock available,
families are being forced to move in with family/ friends, couch surf and resort to
living in tents and caravan parks, further adding to their stress.

How can people donate?

Please donate to The Salvation Army’s 60th Red Shield Appeal by visiting
www.salvationarmy.org.au or call 13 SALVOS. You can also donate at any Salvos
Store. With your support, we can provide hope, help and a chance at a new
beginning.
