Cricket ACT is set to host the country’s best cricketers for the 30th Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships which will be held across Canberra from 7 – 14 January 2014.
This competition will see six teams comprising of Western Australia, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and the ICC East Asia Pacific (EAP) region battling across the seven day carnival in a mixture of two-day, one-day and Twenty20 matches.
The tournament will conclude with the Prime Minister XI match against England on 14 January and a presentation to name the 2014 Australian Country XI.
The tournament, staged in Canberra for the fourth time, has a reputation for unearthing first-class and international cricketers with approximately 45 per cent of Australia’s cricketing talent drawn from country regions including most famously Sir Donald Bradman and more recently Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist and Peter Siddle.
Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager Game and Market Development, Andrew Ingleton said country cricket continues to be a tremendous nurturing ground for talented young players.
“Cricket Australia is dedicated to supporting the competition for players and officials from country regions across Australia and the ICC EAP region and invests significantly into providing opportunities for talented emerging cricketers living in rural settings,” Ingleton said.
“The Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships is a major initiative of that investment and we’re thrilled the competition, now in its 30th year, is still going strong.
“The tournament provides a unique opportunity for rural based players throughout Australia to challenge themselves against the best country cricketers. We know Cricket ACT is proud to host such an event and will make the 2014 competition one of the most successful yet.”
Cricket ACT Chairman Ian McNamee echoed Andrew Ingleton’s comments.
“Regional cricket continues to provide outstanding talent to cricket’s national pathway. The ACT is looking forward to showcasing Canberra’s national tourism sights and its wonderful cricket facilities,” McNamee said.
