Grant to help set the stage for oatley seniors celebration

Member for Oatley, Mark Coure MPMember for Oatley, Mark Coure MP, has helped ensure Oatley is ready for the 2014 Seniors Week celebrations by today awarding local funding as part of the NSW Seniors Week Grants program.

“Seniors play a significant part in our society and they deserve to be celebrated and have their contributions honoured,” Mr Coure said.

“Our Government has ensured that the 2014 Senior Week (15 – 23 March) will be plentiful in activities that focus on celebrating the lives of seniors and that foster continued support and life enrichment.

“In our local area, the Hurstville City Library, Museum, and Gallery will be receiving a $500 grant in the coming weeks to spend on their preparations. The funding will go to their event titled, Get Up and Go! – How to Live a Healthy and Active Life.

“The organisation had some tough competition in securing the grant, as there was interest from hundreds of communities and organisations throughout NSW.”

There were 480 applications received and assessed during the Grants program, with 229 set to receive funding for Seniors Week celebrations.

Minister for Ageing, John Ajaka said NSW’s Seniors Week was the largest celebration for people over 60 in the southern hemisphere.

“The week long festivities promote seniors to live active, healthy and independent lives, and will feature hundreds of free or specially discounted events,” Mr Ajaka said.

“By awarding grants locally, we are helping to spread the celebrations across the state, rather than confining them exclusively to larger towns and cities.”

“We want to make sure that there is plenty to do throughout Seniors Week 2014, and I’d encourage everyone to check out the website, www.nswseniorsweek.com.au, and see what events are planned in their local area.”

“Organisations who are planning events for Seniors Week can also head to the website and register their events, where they will be promoted online for free.”
