In September 2023, the Art Gallery of New South Wales witnessed an exuberant night with an array of distinguished and outstanding celebration of Indian Art work.

The event witnessed many notable members from the Indian diaspora in attendance.

Art Gallery of New South Wales director Dr Michael Brand said: “The Art Gallery of New South Wales continues to maintain a deep commitment to, and respect for, the art of the Indian subcontinent. India is an essential part of the world around us in Sydney, both in terms of geo-politics and trade, and our very own community.

“Since the Art Gallery was established in 1871, we have always exhibited and collected Asian art, and we have displayed Indian art since the middle of the last century. A highlight was the 2009–10 exhibition Garden and Cosmos, which offered a rare chance to see paintings from the royal collection of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust, Jodhpur and to experience the unique art tradition that flourished in the royal courts between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Recently, author, scholar and curator Dr Jim Masselos generously donated an exceptional group of Indian paintings and drawings to the Art Gallery of NSW collection. Some of these works are already on display in our Asian Lantern gallery in the South Building, where contemporary Indian artists confidently with its historical antecedents.”
