Restart yourself by observing silence

By Dr T. Selva

Silence is a powerful and often unappreciated tool that can benefit our body, mind, and soul in many ways.

In a world where we are constantly bombarded by noise, from the buzz of technology to the sounds of traffic and crowds, it is easy to overlook the value of stillness.

However, incorporating quiet moments into our lives can help us improve our well-being and peace of mind.

I write this column excitedly because I joined over 4.3 million people of Bali to observe silence on March 22nd for 24 hours.

The Island of Gods is the only place in the world that has been uniquely celebrating silence for one day for centuries, called Hari Nyepi.

For 24 hours, the island will come to a standstill where no activities are allowed.

It closes the airport, seaports and roads disconnect the power, allows no entertainment, everyone stays indoors, and the day is declared a public holiday.

The island of Balinese Hindus has respected silence strictly for one day every year for many decades. They abandon all worldly activities, and physical pleasures, fast and meditate.

Many would wonder why they do that.

I participated in the sacred celebration and experienced an unusual rejuvenation and serenity. The sunset on the day of silence was unique.

The warm, calming sky appeared to send a message of appreciation for respecting mother Earth.

Most people do not value the importance of silence, which can positively impact our body, mind and soul.

There are numerous benefits of quietness, and among them are:

  • Reduces stress:Silence has been shown to lower stress levels.

When we allow ourselves moments of silence, we allow our body a chance to relax and revitalise, helping to reduce stress levels and improve our overall health.

  • Improves creativity:Silence can stimulate creativity and innovation.

When we quiet our minds and eliminate distractions, we create space for new ideas and insights to emerge.

Many great thinkers, writers and artists have found inspiration in moments of solitude and silence.

  • Enhancesfocus and concentration:When constantly surrounded by noise and distractions, staying focused and concentrating on the task at hand can be challenging. Silence can help us clear our minds and improve our ability to focus, allowing us to be more productive and efficient.
  • Boosts immune function:Research has shown that silence can help lift immune function, which is critical for maintaining good health.

When stressed, our immune system can be compromised, making us more susceptible to illness.

Incorporating moments of silence into our daily lives can help support our immune function and protect our health.

  • Self-realisation: Silence can provide an opportunity for self-reflection and introspection. When we quiet our minds and eliminate external distractions, we can become more aware of our thoughts, feelings, and emotions. This can help us better understand ourselves and our motivations, leading to personal growth and development.
  • Find answers:In silence, we can find the answers we seek because quietness takes us to the core of life. The most significant conversations of our lives occur in silence.
  • Promotes spiritual development:Silence is essential to spiritual practice for many people. It teaches never to say anything that doesn’t improve on silence.

Whether through meditation, prayer, or contemplation, moments of silence can help us connect with our inner selves and with a higher power.

This can provide a sense of purpose, meaning, and gratification.

People in Bali seem to know the secrets of muteness, a time for self-reflection and to give Mother Earth a day of rest and purification.

Whether through meditation, mindfulness, or simply taking a few minutes of quiet each day, prioritising silence can help us lead happier, healthier, and more satisfying lives.
