Chaitra Navratri 2021 This year Goddess shakti Durga festival will commence on April 13, 2021, and will conclude on April 21, 2021.

Day 1: Shailaputri Puja

Date: April 13, Tuesday

The first day of Chaitra Navratri is also known as Pratipada. This day devotees worship an incarnation of Goddess Parvati named Shailputri. On this day, several devotees place Kalash at their home.

Maa Shailputri is the First Form of Maa Durga. She is the daughter of the Himalayas. She is also known as “Parvati” and “Hemvati” Dhyan Mantra: वन्दे वाञ्छितलाभाय चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्। वृषारुढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्॥

Day 2: Brahmacharini Puja

Date: April 14, Wednesday

On the second day of the holy festival, Goddess Brahmacharini, an incarnation of Goddess Paravati, is worshipped. She is worshipped for emancipation (moksha) and endowment of peace and prosperity.

Maa Brahmacharini is the second form of Maa Durga, in this form she did hard penance (Tapasya) to get Lord Shiva as her husband.

Dhyan Mantra: दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमालाकमण्डलू। देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा॥

Dadhanakara Padmabhyam akshamala kamandalam, Devi prasidathu mayi rahmacharinya nuththama.

Day 3: Chandraghanta Puja

Date: April 15, Thursday

On Tritiya day of Chaitra Navratri, devotees worship Goddess Chandraghanta. On this day, devotees wear white clothes as it is believed to be auspicious.

Maa Chandraghanta is the Third form of Maa Durga; this is the married form of Maa Parvati.

Dhyan Mantra: पिण्डज प्रवरारूढ़ा चण्डकोपास्त्रकैर्युता। प्रसीदम तनुते महयं चन्द्रघण्टेति विश्रुता।।

Day 4: Kushmanda Puja

Date: April 16, Friday

On the fourth day, Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped who is known for vegetation on earth. As per Hindu belief, she has eight arms and sits on Tiger.

Maa Kushmanda is the Fourth form of Maa Durga. It is believed that Maa Kushmanda lives inside the Sun and enlightens the whole world with her ultimate energy.

Dhyan Mantra: वन्दे वांछित कामार्थे चंद्रार्घ्कृत शेखराम, सिंहरुढ़ा अष्टभुजा कुष्मांडा यशस्वनिम.

Day 5: Skandamata Puja

Date: April 17, Saturday

On the Panchami, devotees worship Goddess Skandamata, a symbol of the strength of a mother when her child is confronted with danger. As per Hindu belief, the goddess has four arms, carrying a baby in one hand. She is known to ride a ferocious lion.

Maa Skanda Mata is the fifth form of Maa Durga; it is said that when Maa Parvati gave birth to Skanda also known as Kartikeya, she came to be known as Skanda Mata.

Dhyan Mantra: “सिंहासनगता नित्यं पद्माश्रितकरद्वया. शुभदास्तु सदा देवी स्कन्दमाता यशस्विनी.”

Sinhasangata nityam padmashritkardvya , Shubhdastu sada Devi Skandmata Yashswini.

Day 6: Katyani Puja

Date: April 18, Sunday

An incarnation of Durga, Goddess Katyani is worshipped on the sixth day of the holy festival. She is a symbol of courage and is known as the warrior goddess.

Maa Katyayani is the Sixth form of Maa Durga and derives her name from her father Katyayan Rishi; this is the angry form of Maa Durga, in this form she destroyed demon Mahishasura.

Dhyan Mantra: स्वर्णाआज्ञा चक्र स्थितां षष्टम दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्। वराभीत करां षगपदधरां कात्यायनसुतां भजामि॥

Swarnagya chakra sthitam shashtam Durga Trinetram. Varabhit Karam shadgpadmdharam katyayansutam Bhajami.

Day 7: Kaalaratri Puja

Date: April 19, Monday

Goddess Kaalaratri is considered the most ferocious form of Durga. As per Hindu belief, Devi Parvati removed her fair skin to kill the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha. 

Maa Kalratri is the seventh form of Maa Durga, Kalratri is the furious form of Maa Durga, in this form she destroyed the dangerous demons Sumbha and Nisumbha.

Dhyan Mantra: करालवंदना धोरां मुक्तकेशी चतुर्भुजाम्। कालरात्रिं करालिंका दिव्यां विद्युतमाला विभूषिताम॥

Karalvadnam ghoram muktkeshi chaturbhjam. Kaal Ratrim karalikaam divyam vidyutmala vibhushitam.

Day 8: Mahagauri Puja

Date: April 20, Tuesday

On the eighth day of the holy festival, Goddess Mahaguri is worshipped. She is known to be a symbol of peace and intelligence.

Maa MahaGauri is the 8th form of Maa Durga, it is believed that up to the age of 16, Maa Parvati had an extremely fair complexion, due to which she received this name meaning “Ultimate fair”. On this day, we worship young girls.

Dhyan Mantra: पूर्णन्दु निभां गौरी सोमचक्रस्थितां अष्टमं महागौरी त्रिनेत्राम्।

वराभीतिकरां त्रिशूल डमरूधरां महागौरी भजेम्॥

Day 9: Siddhidatri Puja & Ram Navami

Date: April 21, Wednesday

On the night day or Navami, devotees worship Goddess Siddhidatri, who is believed to bestow all types of Siddhis. Also, on this day, Devotees celebrate the birth of Lord Ram.

Maa Siddhidhatri is the 9th form of Maa Durga, it is believed that before the Universe was created, Lord Shiva worshiped Para Shakti to get energy and to create the universe. This Goddess is also known as the other half of Lord Shiva who gave her power to him and came to be known as “Siddhi Datri”

Dhyan Mantra: स्वर्णावर्णा निर्वाणचक्रस्थितां नवम् दुर्गा त्रिनेत्राम्।शख, चक्र, गदा, पदम, धरां सिद्धीदात्री भजेम्॥

Foods for Navratri Fasting

During the fast of Navratras, foods like Sabudana Vada (Sago Vada), Sabudana khichadi (Sago Khichadi), Singhare Ka Halwa (Water Chestnut Flour Halwa), Kuttu Ki Poori (Grass Seed Flour or Buckwheat poori), and Singhare Ke Pakore are preferred for eating.
