| The very first Indian Community Centre was inaugurated amidst much fanfare at Rowville in Melbourne’s south-east. Federal ministers Alan Tudge and Michael Sukkar inaugurated the centre. FIAV established AICCT (Australian Indian Community Charitable Trust) in 2013 for the delivery of such major community projects. The previous project delivered by AICCT was Museum India in Dandenong (Foster Street). FIAV and AICCT are currently working on an Indian Ethno-specific age care facility in Noble Park, Victoria. The funding of $2.5 million was provided by the federal government for establishing the Australian Indian Community centre. The ground floor of the centre can now be used for various community celebrations, personal functions like weddings, leisure activities, language classes, sports like badminton, table tennis and much more. On its first floor is housed the biggest museum of Indian artefacts in Australia. It will be dedicated to the late psychiatrist and respected member of our community Dr Parekh. He not only called Melbourne home for almost 50 years but has also donated a fantastic collection of paintings, artefacts and stamps. Unfortunately, he passed away last month. The centre will meet the cultural and social needs of the nearly 200,000 strong local Indian community. A website is being set up to manage the bookings for the various event to make the working of the centre more effective and transparent. |
