Former finance executive chooses pool industry for his next career move

After ten years in the finance industry Epping local Tejas Dani knows a thing or two about money and business, and he is now applying this expertise to his own endeavours jumping in to starting his own pool business.

As the proud owner of Poolwerx Epping, some might be surprised by such a career turnaround but Tejas said he chose the pool industry as it is stable and less prone to digital disruption.

“Starting a business is a big move for anyone but this was my goal, so it became about finding the right business for long-term success,” he said. “Pool maintenance is a defensive industry, in that it remains relatively stable during both economic upturns and downturns and a pool needs to be maintained regularly to stay healthy.”

“It is also less prone to digital disruption, or digital competition, as pool and spa owners tend to buy chemicals directly from their pool maintenance servicer or retail pool store.”

Only newly opened, Tejas will service the Epping, North Epping and Cheltenham areas and already has plans to expand into the Carlingford area in the next 12 months.

“My plan for the business is for it to be a long-term profitable venture that will ultimately involve my wife, who is currently working in the financial sector,” he said.

“As it grows I will also be able to employ locals and give them a clear career path as certified pool technicians or retail pool assistants.”

Tejas will provide a full mobile pool and spa maintenance service for clients in their homes, including pool and spa water testing and balancing, cleaning, equipment maintenance and repair and advice.

“Pool owners can sometimes neglect their pools at this time of the year, but pools can become green very quickly over winter if the water is not balanced and it is much cheaper to maintain your pool over winter with regular water tests than try to fix an algae-infested pool when summer starts and you’re looking to use the pool again,” he said.

Tejas said unbalanced pool water could also lead to deterioration of the pool surface and equipment, such as pool filters and chlorinators.

“Pools are a valuable asset for home owners and it’s expensive to have them resurfaced or to replace pool equipment, so it makes sense to keep them maintained all year round.”

Along with residential clients, strata managers and real estate agents will be a very big focus area for expansion of Tejas’ business.

“There are around 1600 pools in the Epping area and around 1500 in the Carlingford area and there is also very large scope for B2B work in both areas. I plan to grow quickly and once we have moved into the Carlingford area I will consider opening a retail pool and spa store in Epping.”Tejas Poolwerx photo 2
