The Adani Group: From Delivering Energy to Transforming Lives

Construction has now began on Adani Mining’s Carmichael Project, which will deliver 1,500 direct and 6,750 indirect jobs during ramp up and construction. This project has been more than eight years in the making and will produce thermal coal for export to Asian markets, including India, via Adani’s existing Abbot Point Coal Export Terminal in Queensland.

adaniThe Adani Group is India’s largest ports and logistics business, the country’s leading private power generator and distribution company, solar power generation and manufacturing company. The group also includes integrated coal management, agribusiness, gas distribution and defence businesses.

Adani believes that a sustainable energy mix including renewable and non-renewable energy sources is needed to provide affordable and reliable energy and to meet growing demand in countries like India as we transition to a lower emissions future. To this end the company has significant investment and generation capacity in both thermal (coal-fired) and solar energy. Adani’s renewables business Adani Green Energy Limited has electricity generation capacity of more than 1970MW. To put this in context, this is more than enough to meet the entire power needs of either Tasmania or South Australia.

In Australia, Adani’s Abbot Point Coal Export Terminal has been safely exporting coal from mines in the Bowen Basin to the world for 30 years.

Adani Australia has also developed the Rugby Run solar farm, near Moranbah, in central Queensland’s coal fields. Rugby Run recently started generating energy into the national grid. Rugby Run will supply 65MW of renewable power to the grid each year, which is enough to power about 23,000 homes.

The Carmichael Project in Queensland incorporates an open cut thermal coal mine and a 200km-long railway line that will link the mine to the existing rail network. The mine will generate millions of dollars in mining taxes and royalties that will contribute to building schools, hospitals and roads for Queensland. Product coal for the mine will be exported to Asian markets where it will be used to generate affordable, reliable energy that will help lift living standards and alleviate poverty.

Delivering energy is an important step in alleviating poverty and creating new opportunities, but it’s not all about generating business.

In Australia, Adani Mining delivered more than $500,000 in sponsorship and community partnerships with regional Queensland community groups last financial year, all before the Carmichael Project started construction.

The Adani Foundation is the group’s social responsibility arm that is transforming lives of some of the poorest people in India. Its healthcare program helps 200,000 people every year, while its sustainable livelihood programs have made over 35,000 people and their families self-reliant. The Foundation has also improved the lives of over 500,000 people across 177 villages by helping provide better roads, drinking water, and other basic facilities.
