Indian Australian constitutional lawyer, Shireen Morris, has been endorsed as Labor’s impressive new candidate for the federal seat of Deakin. Shireen grew up and spent most of her life in North Ringwood, lives in Nunawading, and has a long connection with the local area. Shireen was born in Australia, and is of Indian and Fijian-Indian heritage. Her father is Gujarati and her mother is of South Indian origin, and was born in Fiji. Shireen’s parents migrated to Australia, and both her mum and dad worked for many years as GPs in Park Orchards.
Shireen has an eclectic career history. In her twenties, she worked as an actress and singer. She worked at the old BI-LO in Ringwood and temped as an administrative assistant to make ends meet. Shireen later studied law, and eventually earned a PhD in constitutional law. Shireen has spent the last 8 years fighting for Indigenous constitutional recognition, working with Indigenous leader, Noel Pearson. She is now a McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellow at Melbourne University Law School.
Shireen is also a regular commentator in print, TV and radio and has published three books. Her latest book, Radical Heart: Three Stories Make Us One (MUP) tells her personal story, and was published in July.
Shireen is passionate about fairness and equality, and wants to listen and work hard for the people of Deakin. She understands that many locals are concerned about the cost of living, accessing healthcare, housing affordability, penalty rates and climate change.
She also wants to stand up for an inclusive and multicultural Australia – to ensure all Australians a fair go. Together with Noel Pearson, Shireen has advocated the idea that Australia is a nation of three entwined stories: our ancient Indigenous heritage, our British institutional inheritance, and our multicultural triumph. These three stories make us one: Australians.
Shireen is enthusiastic about the battle ahead, and is seeking support from the community. You can sign up to volunteer on her campaign and donate here: www.shireenmorris.com.au Follow Shireen on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ShireenMorrisMs/
