VIVID LIVE OPENING NIGHT : LIGHTING OF THE SAILS, ICE CUBE, IRON & WINE and FUGAZI’s GUY PICCIOTTO

Tonight, Vivid LIVE transformed the Sydney Opera House inside and out from the iconic Sails and Concert Hall to the newly renovated Joan Sutherland Theatre and intimate Utzon Room.

Award-winning Australian artist Jonathan Zawada’s stunning 3D light sculpture Metamathemagical filled Utzon’s architectural masterpiece with bold neon and striking geometric designs that evolve, dissolve and metamorphose.

Legendary rapper Ice Cube raised the roof of the Concert Hall this evening, with fans on their feet throughout. The star brought rap to the World Heritage-listed stage with a medley of mega tracks like Check Yoself, F*** tha Police and Straight Outta Compton, also performing with son O’Shea Jackson Jr, calling him “a chip off the ole Cube”.

 Ice Cube said:

“I’m honoured to play here. Once they said I could perform in this building, I had to come. Because rap should’ve been in this building a long time ago … This music deserves platforms like the Sydney Opera House. But there’s no mother******* opera going on tonight.”

Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam returned to the Opera House to premiere his sixth album Beast Epic. His effortless vocals captivated audiences in an intimate performance, complete with full band.

In his first Australian appearance since 1991, American punk-rock band Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto presented a screening of the band’s documentary Instrument, followed by an in-conversation with fans.
