As his film ‘October’, a beautiful love story of a different kind releases on April 13, Varun Dhawan gets candid about his superstardom status, working with Shoojit Sircar, his desire to meet Australian fans and a lot more in an Indus Age exclusive. Excerpts:

By Nidhi Kumari
You are already a superstar with all your films becoming super-duper hits both commercially and critically, what are your thoughts on your super stardom status?

This is something which I really don’t understand too well but what I do understand is that everytime my film comes out, people are waiting for it, people are expecting something which is a good thing and I want people to expect that from me, this is what matters at the end of the day. People will go to watch a film only if it is entertaining. I do everything to bring a smile on the faces of my fans, and that is all.

Varun, you aren’t very old to the industry and yet your performances in all your films have been impactful in fact in some of your films you have pulled off the characters like a veteran. Whom would you credit for that magic you weave on screen?

I think it’s the director… I push myself everytime to give the best, and I have been blessed to have characters like Badri , Prem, Humpty, Raghu and now Dan.

Your upcoming film ‘October’ is based on unconditional love. Tell us about how this film was offered to you and your character in the film.

The film is not only based on unconditional love,  that is one part of the film. There are so many other different aspects of human life, emotions which is very real being captured in October. It is something that hasn’t come out since a very long time. We have shot in Delhi roads, traffic jams, 4 o’ clock in the morning, riding bikes , you have not see something like that captured in reality, it’s very tough shooting that organically.

My character in the film, Dan was a hotel intern, he goes to work , he feels very under appreciated at work,( I am sure a lot of people do). He is not treated well, he is irritated at the world .It is a very different character from my point of view. Plus, he is very young, he’s only 21 or 22 and the girl Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) also working there, and what transpires between them is something which is life changing, and eventually something else comes out.

This film is directed by Shoojit Sircar, who is known to make content driven films. And this is your first film with him. Tell us about your entire experience and anything that you learnt from him, which you will always remember..

I have learnt so much from him, to focus on the process, more than the result. I have learnt to keep your work sacred. As you keep yourself in the workspace, the better the result and performance will be. That’s how Shoojit Da keeps us set. He is very focused about his work and you are not really acting,  you are in the world of films, which is something only he can do.

The film also stars debutant actress Banita Sandhu. How is she as a co-actress?

(Smiles)…Banita is a sweet heart, she is  only 20 years old. She’s a very good actor and what she has done in the film is very difficult and she has been able to do it pretty well.

What do you want the audience to take away from your film October?

You know there’s a very special message which Shoojit Da used to say, how abused the word love is, how it is taken for granted and how we don’t really mean it but say it sometimes, how we take life and people for granted, we don’t realize that, it is one of those deep messages that this film gives.

On personal front, Varun , Coming from a film background, your father Mr David Dhawan who is one of the most successful directors of Indian cinema and your brother is also into film making. What is the atmosphere like at home? Do you discuss films?

We discuss films, films and only films. My father has made all kinds of films. Sometimes our discussions on films do differ a lot but we do talk about it.

Finally, what is your Message for your fans in Australia?

Thank you so much for all the love, I promise to come to Australia and meet all of you, dance and do some kind of show, it’s work in progress and I definitely want to come to Australia (Smiles). Please watch the film and I hope you all enjoy it!
