FUTURE STATE: NSW IN 2056

The NSW Government will provide a glimpse into what the State might look like in the next 40 years in its upcoming Future State report, giving an insight into challenges and opportunities for the nation’s strongest economy and fastest growing state, Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian has announced.

The Intergenerational report, which is published every five years, projects demographic, workforce and housing trends across NSW over the next four decades. It also provides a long-term projection of the State’s economic and fiscal position.

“We want NSW to show the way in the future,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“We have the strongest economy and budget in the nation and we need to continue to work hard to build on this into the future.

“We owe it to the next generation to think deeply about the challenges that face us now and to continue to lay the foundations for a strong future.”

By 2056, NSW’s population is expected to grow to 11.2 million people – almost 50 per cent higher than today’s population of 7.6 million and more than double the population of 5 million in 1976.

“This report will be incredibly useful in providing insights into the financial pressures facing NSW over the long term. We can take the necessary action in the coming  years to provide the highest possible standard of living for all our citizens into  the future,” the Treasurer said.

The report will be released on May 26 at a luncheon event hosted by CEDA in Parramatta.
