GREYHOUND SPECIAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY EXTENDED

The NSW Government has agreed to give Former High Court Justice Michael McHugh AC a further two-month extension to complete the Special Commission of Inquiry into the Greyhound Industry in NSW.

Commissioner McHugh has requested the extension after more information that requires detailed examination came to light.

This announcement follows a six-month extension granted in September last year and will mean the report of the Special Commission of Inquiry will delivered to the Government in May 2016.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant said the NSW Government understands the public and industry participants are eager to see the outcomes of the inquiry but is committed to giving Mr McHugh the time he needs to fully investigate.

“This inquiry has the powers of a Royal Commission and a clear mandate from the NSW Government to leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of animal welfare and integrity issues in greyhound racing,” Mr Grant said.

“The Government took swift action when the live baiting scandal broke and this Inquiry needs the opportunity to be thorough and forensic in its investigation.”

The Government does not anticipate any further extensions at this stage.
