Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres
today welcomed current English Premier League Champions, Chelsea FC, to
Australia ahead of their match against Sydney FC on Tuesday.
The match was secured exclusively for Sydney by the NSW Government, through our tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, in partnership with ANZ Stadium.
“Chelsea FC is a powerhouse of international club football, with more than 509 million fans around the world, so I am delighted to welcome the club to Sydney for the first time since 1974,” Mr Ayres said.
“With a packed house at ANZ Stadium, the atmosphere promises to be electric with
some of the world’s best players on show in front of a sea of blue from both Chelsea & Sydney FC fans.”
The match is set to provide a major boost to the local economy, with more than $8
million expected to be injected into NSW through visitor expenditure.
The match completes a bumper period of major events in Sydney, including the match between Sydney FC and Tottenham Hotspur, the first game of the State of Origin series, the Australian Badminton Open, and the Super Rugby Grand Final rematch between the NSW Waratahs and the Crusaders.
Throughout this time the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, Vivid Sydney has been taking place which continues until June 8.
“The past few weeks really have proven once again, Sydney is Australia’s capital city for major events,” Mr Ayres concluded.
