The Ethnic Communities’ Council of NSW is celebrating 40 years; a milestone that we will commemorate with a Gala Dinner on the 21st of May, 2015.
Forty years ago a group of ethnic community leaders met at the Sydney Town Hall and took the Australian experiment of Multiculturalism one step further by establishing the Ethnic Communities’ Council of NSW.
Four decades on we celebrate the work and achievements of the ECCNSW as a tireless advocate of the vision of a pluralistic and multicultural Australia.
According to this vision, we embarked on a successful advocacy campaign in opposition to the proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act, which would have removed restrictions on various forms of racial discrimination.
We have also worked helping new citizens and small businesses to feel at home in assisting them through different programs, such as the Multicultural Access Project, Sustainable Living Project or the Business Energy Smart Tips Project, just to name a few.
In partnership with Macquarie University and SBS, we have engaged in multiculturalism debates and media mentorship in response to concerns about mainstream media’s portrayal of multicultural communities.
We have a cause to celebrate our achievements, acknowledge our achievers as well as take stock of the great challenges still ahead.
