Minister for Medical Research Pru Goward has congratulated Sydney Health Partners for its cutting edge collaboration after it was named a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Advanced Health Research Translation Centre.
The winning NSW bid was one of four groups named in the first ever NHMRC Advanced Health Research and Translation Centres scheme which encourages collaborations between health, education and research institutions to grow knowledge and use medical research to improve patient care.
“I was delighted to hear the work of Sydney Health Partners was judged to be on par with the world’s best research and translation centres by a panel of international experts,” Ms Goward said.
The Sydney Health Partners brings together leading research teams from the Sydney Local Health District (LHD), Western Sydney LHD, Northern Sydney LHD and the University of Sydney, and follows the NSW Health and Medical Research Strategic Plan, which has overseen substantial development of Research Hubs across NSW.
“It can be many years before patients get to benefit from the results of medical research,” Ms Goward said.
“The Hubs encourage NSW’s brightest and most talented researchers, clinicians and educators to work more closely together to turn research outcomes into clinical trials, better drug treatments and ultimately improved outcomes for patients.
Ms Goward said a further two NSW research facilities also impressed the NHMRC including the Sydney Alliance for Health Research and Training and the Hunter New England LHD and Hunter Medical Research Institute.
The NSW Government has previously committed $900,000 per year to enhance the Research Hubs across the state to ensure they are inclusive of the wealth of talent in research and innovation that exists in NSW.
