WA gives National Youth Week a kick start

downloadHundreds of young people are expected to descend on Perth’s cultural precinct next week when National Youth Week gets under way.

On Tuesday, Youth Minister Tony Simpson will launch the annual event, the largest celebration of young people in Australia, at the Western Australian Museum.

“Thousands of young people aged 12-25 throughout Australia are involved in the planning and delivery of National Youth Week each year,” Mr Simpson said.

From Esperance to the Kimberley, 88 events have received more than $80,000 in State and Australian Government funding to promote culture, sport and well-being among WA’s youth.

Events range from a world record attempt involving hundreds of penguin costumes in Rockingham and a battle of the bands in Karratha, to an art-in-the-park workshop in Leederville and a youth issues forum in Bunbury.

KickstART will deliver a program of arts clinics, discussion forums, performances, live music, special events and activities throughout the Perth Cultural Centre and surrounds, plus a market day in Northbridge on April 11.

“The week provides opportunities for young people to express their ideas, showcase their talents, have their voices heard and, most importantly, have fun.  It celebrates the energy, dedication and passion of young people and connects them to arts, culture, sport and their communities,” the Minister said.

The theme of 2015 National Youth Week, ‘It starts with us’, reflects the involvement of young people in the planning and design of the activities and events to be held during the week.
