Seniors will get the opportunity to be inspired and get informed at NSW Seniors Week sessions planned by Fair Trading this week.
Sessions are on wide ranging topics including scam awareness, shopping rights and living in a retirement village.
Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is encouraging seniors to attend events in their local area.
“Seniors are important members of our community and we have put together an informative and engaging program of events throughout NSW Seniors Week with a focus on being a smart consumer,” said Mr Stowe.
Fair Trading events will be held across NSW from Port Macquarie to Ulladulla and everyone has a chance to get involved.
To coincide with the week-long festival Fair Trading will launch the 2015 Seniors Guide, an invaluable resource for seniors on their rights when shopping, buying and maintaining a car, looking to hire a tradesperson, moving to a retirement village or residential park and much more.
The 2015 Seniors Guide aims to empower seniors with access to important information about their consumer rights and what steps to take when things go wrong with a trader or service provider.
There is also a wealth of information on our website for online savvy seniors and their families to access.
Mr Stowe said seniors could take advantage of the new text-to-speech technology, being rolled out across the NSW Fair Trading website.
“Text-to-speech is a fantastic new function that provides a talking version of the online text at the push of a button,” he said.
“Some senior groups can be a very vulnerable and it is important they are aware of their consumer rights. Having this function means that people with vision impairments or reading difficulties can still have the same access to information.”
