Selling his house and shop and taking loans at heavy rates of interest rates to help a sex worker whom he loved and wanted to marry to pay her debts, a man saw red when she still refused to live with him and murdered her, police said Monday.
Tannu Chawla, 27, and his friend, Yogesh, 30, who helped him kill the 30-year-old woman were arrested from the Mehrauli Metro station in south Delhi for the crime.
Chawla said that despite selling off his property and taking loans to help the woman, her betrayal forced him to commit the murder.
He killed the sex worker at brothel number 57 of central Delhi’s G.B. Road area Jan 2 morning with the help of Yogesh and fled from the spot.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav said the duo went to G.B. Road Jan 1 night and stayed at the brothel with the victim.
“They stabbed her to death next day early in the morning when she was sleeping,” he said.
Chawla told police he was the regular customer of the victim, hailing from Andhra Pradesh.
“In 2003, he fell in love with the victim and told her to leave prostitution and live with him. But she said she could not leave this profession as she was under heavy debts,” said Yadav, citing Chawla’s confession.
According to Chawla, he sold his house and shop and took loans from various financers and gave the money to the sex worker.
“In December, he pressurised her to come out of G.B. Road and live with him but she refused. At this, he became furious and decided to eliminate her. He asked Yogesh to help him,” said the officer.
“Yogesh, working as a driver in a south Delhi school, had a loan of Rs.1.5 lakh to repay. He agreed to help Chawla for the same amount,” said the officer.
