Gladys Berejiklian med rel: Countdown starts to first South West Rail Link service

Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian today said there’s only one week to go until the South West Rail Link opens to customers on Sunday 8 February 2015, complete with two-brand new stations at Leppington and Edmondson Park.

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals came to government promising to build the South West Rail Link and I’m delighted that in just over one week customers will be able to catch their first train service – one year ahead of schedule,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This is great news for the south west and means for the first time residents will be able to catch regular, air-conditioned train services from Leppington to Liverpool, stopping at Edmondson Park and the upgraded Glenfield Station.

“Trains will run every 30 minutes from 5am to midnight, seven days a week, and customers will be able to change at Glenfield or Liverpool to connect with services to the Sydney CBD, Parramatta and the airport.

“With reliable train services, two new state-of-the-art stations and 1,250 new, free commuter parking spaces, the South West Rail Link will change the way of life for tens of thousands of residents who have made the south west home.

“I am pleased the government has been able to deliver this crucial rail line for Sydney’s fastest growing area, more than a year ahead of schedule and $300 million under budget – a great example of how infrastructure should be built in this state.”

Ms Berejiklian said the 11.4 kilometre rail link will connect the fast-growing south west community to the rest of the city, bringing more jobs and families to the region.

“Every time I visit the south west I see more housing being built along the rail line. Unlike the North West Rail Link where we’re digging rail tunnels because Labor failed to plan ahead, this is a rail line being built for future generations,” she said.

“I encourage customers to start planning their journeys on the rail link from 8 February. As well as 1,250 car parking spaces, kiss and ride zones, footpaths and bicycle parking, there will be two new bus routes and more than 890 bus services a week to connect customers to their new stations at Leppington and Edmondson Park.”
