Duncan Gay med rel: Getting real time travel advice to motorists on the M5 East

Motorists using the M5 East Motorway will benefit from up to the minute travel time information this holiday season with the start of upgrades of electronic message signs along this busy corridor.

Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay said from tomorrow, motorists will be given additional travel advice, in time for the busy holiday period.

“These new signs will provide important travel information to more than 100,000 road users who use the M5 East daily,” Mr Gay said.

“This is the first stage of a $6.5 million project to upgrade the electronic signs along the 10 kilometre route.

“It’s been a month of change on the M5 corridor with the NSW Government also opening the new six lane M5 West Widening $400 million project, which will slash travel time for motorists by a quarter during peak periods.

“The new signs will provide advice on upcoming incidents and traffic movement by warning of delays and advising duration and traffic conditions. They will also inform motorists to take alternative routes when needed.

“The NSW Government has rolled out a record number of VMS upgrades along key stretches of road to give motorists up to date and real time information including upgrading signs on the M1 and M4 motorways.

“We are committed to delivering critical road upgrades as well as providing motorists with important travel information to ensure they spend less time in the car and more time home with their families.

“Motorists will notice the new signs at four key locations on the M5 East Motorway. Next year, all existing electronic signs on the M5 East corridor will be upgraded,” Mr Gay said.
