SC notice to Haryana over police action on media persons

New Delhi, Dec 1 (IANS) The Supreme Court Monday issued notice to the Haryana government over the police action on media persons outside controversial sect leader Rampal’s ashram Nov 19.

The bench of Justice T.S. Thakur and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel issued notice as counsel Rajiv Dhawan informed the court about the grievous injuries suffered by media persons during cane-charge by Haryana Police.

Earlier, Justice Thakur asked Dhawan to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court, but issued notice after counsel said he was amicus curiae in the hearing of the case of June 4-5, 2011, midnight swoop by Delhi Police on yoga guru Ramdev while he was camping at the Ramlila ground protesting against corruption.

Haryana Police cane-charged media persons covering the incidents near Rampal’s ashram. Rampal was eventually arrested Nov 19 after a two-week stand-off between his supporters and the state police.

Nearly 50-60 media persons were injured, some of them seriously, while the equipments of a few were broken.

The court was moved by some of the injured media persons.
