NSW Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay today reminded drivers heading to the Sydney CBD this weekend that the 40km/h speed limit zone will be rolled out from tomorrow.
“The 40km/h speed limit will make the roads around this high pedestrian area even safer and is ahead of schedule to ensure the change is in place for the warmer months and more people are out and about,” Mr Gay said.
“Those in the Sydney CBD this weekend will notice the 40km/h zone signs going up in the area bound by Castlereagh Street to the east, Kent Street to the west and Hay Street to the south.
“I first announced this change in May and close to a fortnight ago I announced that it would be progressively rolled out from Saturday 27 September.
“To make sure motorists are aware of the changes we have undertaken an intensive awareness campaign – we’ve been using radio, online and newspaper advertising as well as VMS road signs to get the message out.
“The message is clear – like any other time they’re behind the wheel, drivers need to look out for the signs and follow the speed limit.
“A vehicle that hits a pedestrian at 50km/h is twice as likely to cause a fatality as the same vehicle travelling at 40km/h – that’s why this change is so important.
“It’s not only motorists behaviour that needs to change – if you’re walking around, cross at the lights, obey traffic signals and don’t get distracted by your mobile phone,” Mr Gay said.
The 40km/h zone will link in with the current 40km/h speed limit in The Rocks to the north of the CBD. The area will include a 40km/h speed limit on and adjacent to George Street.
