Minister for the Arts Troy Grant today invited NSW local councils to apply for funding under the Government’s new Public Library Infrastructure Grants program.
The program will provide an additional $15 million dollars over 4 years to assist councils to improve their public library buildings, spaces and information technology.
“The NSW Government has demonstrated its commitment to supporting NSW public libraries through increased funding to address library infrastructure needs,” Mr Grant said.
“The NSW Government has a strong track record of delivering for NSW public libraries, with $27.5 million in NSW Government funding to assist the provision of public libraries this year alone.
“This grants program will help councils improve and extend library facilities to better meet the growing and varied needs of communities.
“Each application will be assessed on merit with projects encouraged to demonstrate community benefit, particularly in areas of disadvantage.
“This is an opportunity for Councils to deliver quality services for their local communities,” Mr Grant said.
NSW public libraries have enjoyed considerable growth in usage over the past decade, showing their value and relevance to communities across the State. Annual statistics show that over 35 million people visit NSW public libraries, borrow 46 million items and use over 5 million internet hours.
NSW State Librarian and Chief Executive Alex Byrne said public libraries are highly valuable and relevant to communities across the State.
“Applications that position libraries as community hubs, including appropriate co-locations with other community facilities and projects that increase public space and technology, are particularly encouraged under the program,” Mr Byrne said.
