Nine community projects that aim to reduce waste and increase recycling will share in $72,315 in State Government grants.
Announcing the successful grant recipients today, Environment Minister Albert Jacob said the community projects would be awarded between $1,000 and $19,907 to fund recycling, reuse and community education initiatives.
“The recipients of this Community Grants Scheme have all shown innovative approaches to the management of waste in their local communities,” Mr Jacob said.
“These community projects will operate across a number of Perth suburbs and the Peel region and will encourage people at a local level to reduce waste and increase recycling. The grants scheme supports their hard work which is contributing to a better environment.”
Projects awarded funds include Gosnells Community Men’s Shed which will use their $8,140 grant to host a recycle point for truck and car batteries and establish a composting facility within their community garden.
“Another grant winner is Dismantle Inc. which will receive $8,500 for its bike recycling program. Based in Fremantle, the program sees at-risk young people take part in mentored workshops where they can rebuild bikes. Bikes and parts are donated by bike shops and community members,” the Minister said.
The grants are allocated by the Waste Authority and administered by the Department of Environment and Regulation.
