West Australians will have an exciting chance to go behind-the-scenes at ChemCentre, the State’s chemical and forensic science laboratories which will hold an open day on Saturday.
Premier and Science Minister Colin Barnett said ChemCentre’s ‘science superheroes’ would share their work with vibrant displays, activities, tours and science shows, with the theme ‘Science Saves the Day’.
The Open Day – which coincides with National Science Week – will also feature guest appearances from WA Police, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Racing and Wagering WA and Greyhounds as Pets, highlighting the diverse and fascinating applications of chemistry in the community.
“It is really important that the whole community gets the opportunity to see some of the extraordinary range of applications for science,” Mr Barnett said.
“It is particularly good for young people to get a taste for the exciting career possibilities open to them if they are interested in science subjects.”
Visitors will have the chance to:
undergo chemical ‘decontamination’ while dressed in protective suits and equipment
discover the technology in mobile laboratories that responds to clandestine drug laboratories, mystery white powders and other hazards
witness exciting chemistry demonstrations
taste science in action with liquid nitrogen ice cream.
The free event is open to all ages and is best suited to anyone curious about the chemistry and forensic science that takes place in everyday across Western Australia.
