Emergency Services Minister Joe Francis has urged the community to take action to minimise the risk of fire in their homes.
“Last winter, nine people were injured and 162 homes were damaged or destroyed by accidental house fires, many of which could have been easily prevented,” Mr Francis said.
“House fires can occur in any home and can be absolutely devastating for those affected. Fire can engulf an entire room within just four minutes.”
The Minister said home fires were often caused by carelessness, such as when cooking was left unattended on stoves, candles were left burning and flammable items were placed too close to heaters or open flames.
“The dangers of house fires are very real and I urge people to be careful this winter and always stay alert when using anything within their home that may catch alight or start a fire,” he said.
“Our career and volunteer firefighters are ready to respond to fires this winter but you must do your part to stay safe – and prevention is the best approach to fire safety in your home.
“Important steps to take to protect your home and family include ensuring your home security allows you to escape as quickly and safely as possible if a fire starts, checking electrical appliances for faults and testing your smoke alarm monthly.”
