A new identity card with the same level of integrity as a driver’s licence will be available from July 1 to assist people who do not possess a driver’s licence or passport to prove their identity.
Transport Minister Dean Nalder and Disability Services Minister Helen Morton today launched the new Western Australian photo card, which will replace the proof of age card as a superior form of photo identification.
Mr Nalder said the Department of Transport (DoT) developed the voluntary photo identification card in response to community demand from non-drivers who faced challenges in providing photographic identification.
“The photo card will have the same international best-practice security features as the new WA driver’s licence also being introduced from July 1, and be recognised by DoT as a primary form of photographic identification, unlike the proof of age card,” he said.
“Sophisticated graphic design elements and deep laser engraving are among the overt security features of WA’s new driver’s licence and photo cards; while other features are being kept secret to protect the level of integrity and make fraud more difficult.”
Mrs Morton said the photo card would benefit many people, including those with a disability aged from 16 years, who do not hold a driver’s licence.
“Unlike the proof of age card, the photo card also offers the choice of including a holder’s address, a requirement of primary-standard identification,” she said.
