Hon Terry Waldron MLA — World’s best head to Albany for biking event

4Australia’s first urban downhill mountain bike race will be held on the South Coast of Western Australia this weekend when more than 100 riders gather for the Albany Urban Downhill 2014.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the adventure cycling event would have riders starting in the hills of Mount Clarence above scenic Princess Royal Harbour, and racing through the historic streets of Albany’s CBD to ANZAC Peace Park.

“This event will allow the people of Albany to watch and experience the exciting sport of mountain bike racing in a local setting,” he said.

The event will take place on Sunday June 22, 2014 with up to 120 riders expected to take part.

“Riders will be coming from all over Australia to compete in this high-speed downhill race which will make the most of both Albany’s hills and the historic urban features,” Mr Waldron said.

Through the State Government’s Country Sport Enrichment Scheme, cycling’s peak body WestCycle has received a grant of $10,000 towards a comprehensive Community Activities Plan, happening in conjunction with the race.

The plan will involve national and international riders Sam Hill (3x World Downhill Mountain Bike Champion and 2x World Cup Mountain Bike Champion) and Jackson Davis (2014 Australian Junior Downhill Mountain Bike team member).

The Minister said the pair would be involved in school visits, community events and a club clinic as well as the downhill event, benefitting not just mountain bikers but the entire Albany community.

“The event aligns well with the City of Albany Trails Master Plan, which is in the final stages of development, and WestCycle’s strategic plan, Our Bike Path,” he said.

“We believe there’s great potential for this event to grow and become a ‘must-attend’ for both spectators and riders.”
