Fireworks lit up the skies over Sydney Harbour last night as the State celebrated its historic win in Rugby League’s State of Origin, NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Major Events Andrew Stoner said today.
“After eight long years we have turned the corner and I congratulate the NSW Blues on their gutsy effort to return the State of Origin silverware to this State,” Mr Stoner said.
“To mark this historic moment, sky blue fireworks in front of Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, coloured blue since last Friday night, set the scene for the State’s celebrations.
“The atmosphere was electric at ANZ Stadium last night with fans flocking to Sydney for Game 2 and I praise the loyal NSW fans for their passion and wonderful support.
“I commend Coach Laurie Daley for entrenching that winning culture back into the NSW side and Captain Paul Gallen, who has led his team magnificently through this gruelling series,” he said.
Mr Stoner said he was delighted with the results both on and off the field.
“This is a great result for NSW Blues fans but also for the NSW economy, with a crowd of more than 83,000 packing into ANZ Stadium,” Mr Stoner said.
“Not only have the NSW Blues united Rugby League fans across the State, but NSW is also a victor in its ability to again attract big visitor numbers to a major sporting event.
“The NSW Government is proud to have secured five Origin clashes over the four years to 2017, including the much anticipated Game Two of the 2014 series.
“These matches are estimated to contribute over $65 million to the NSW economy, through visitor spend by overseas, interstate and intrastate visitors,” he said.
