A total of 70 traffic police teams along with other police officers, deputed in Police Control Room (PCR) vehicles, will man Delhi’s roads for safe New Year’s eve celebrations.
The police personnel will be deployed Dec 31 around 7 p.m. onward till the New Year has been ushered in and celebrations end.
“Traffic police will deploy 70 teams to check drunken driving,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla.
“Drunken drivers will be fined Rs.2,000 apart from suspension of their driving licences. The defaulters may get a jail term,” Shukla said.
At least 24,564 drivers have been prosecuted this year for drunken driving till Dec 15 while 3,397 of these were jailed.
Driving licences of 631 motorists have been suspended.
“Special pickets will be installed in coordination with area police to check stunt mobike riders, overspeeding apart from reckless, zig-zag and dangerous driving,” said Shukla.
PCR vehicles would also be deployed in Mehrauli, Saket, Vasant Vihar, South Extension, Rajouri Garden, Pitampura, Laxmi Nagar and Mayur Vihar areas since Dec 31 evening, he added.
Special arrangements have been made for the places in the vicinity of Connaught Place.
Some other areas of Delhi that will be under special police arrangement are Saket, M-Block Market of Greater Kailash, Chirag Delhi, New Friends Colony, Defence Colony, South Extension, Mehrauli, Aya Nagar Border, Khanpur, Nehru Place near Eros Hotel, Near Govindpuri Metro Station, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj, Kapashera, Dwarka, Rajouri Garden, Netaji Subhash Place, Rohini, Pitampura, Ashok Vihar, G.T. Karnal Road, Karkardooma, Laxmi Nagar, Preet Vihar and Mayur Vihar-II.
“No private and public transport vehicles shall be allowed to proceed towards Connaught Place, Mandi House, Bengali Market, Ranjit Singh flyover, Minto Road, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg crossing, Chelmsford Road near New Delhi Railway Station, R.K. Ashram Marg, Chitragupta Marg, Gole Market, Patel Chowk, K.G. Marg, Ferozshah Road crossing and Jai Singh Road-Bangla Sahib Lane from 7 p.m. onwards,” a police advisory said.
According to the advisory, no vehicular traffic shall be allowed in inner, middle or outer circle of Connaught Place.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes available for North, South, East and West directions.
Limited parking place will be available near Connaught Place on first-come-first-served basis.
