Lisbon, May 12 (IANS) Estoril has beaten Sporting 1-0 in the final round of the Portuguese League.
Estoril Sunday started on a better foot from the very start, with Brazilian midfielder Evandro Goebel converting a penalty in the 5th minute and sending Rui Patricio the wrong way, reported Xinhua.
Bruno Lopes was close to making it 2-0 in the 12th minute with a header, following a cross by Evandro, but his effort flew past the right post.
Sporting almost equalized with a penalty seven minutes later, but goalkeeper Vagner da Silva blocked Adrien Silva’s effort to the right.
In the second half, Jefferson’s effort went wide, and in the 62nd Algerian forward Islam Slimani tried to mislead Vagner, but his effort went over the crossbar.
Sporting already had its second place secured but failed to accomplish its objective of ending the championships without home defeats, and lost at home for the first time since February 2013.
